Spiritual Self-Care Practices for Therapists & Practitioners
As spiritual therapists, our work is sacred. We hold space for others, support them on their journeys, and help them navigate their challenges. But let’s be real—this work can be incredibly draining, both mentally and energetically. If you're someone who acknowledges the presence of energy, spirituality, or something divine, you've likely felt this energetic drain. So, how do we care for ourselves while caring for others?
It’s not uncommon to hear spiritual therapists express concerns about their emotional and energetic well-being. The nature of our work often requires us to be fully present for our clients, families, and communities. Yet, this can leave us feeling agitated, drained, or suddenly exhausted after sessions. These feelings aren't just coincidental; they're signs that we need to take better care of our own energy.
Why Am I Feeling Drained?
Many of us ask, "Why am I so agitated after a session?" or "Why do I feel so tired all of a sudden?" The answer often lies in the energetic exchange that occurs during our sessions. Holding space for others can transfer some of their emotional and energetic burdens onto us. It's crucial to recognize this and acknowledge that we need both a before and after-care practice to maintain our own well-being.
The Importance of Before and After Care
Acknowledging the need for a before and after-care routine is the first step in preserving our energy. This work is sacred, but it can also be draining. By cultivating practices that help us recharge, we can continue to show up fully for those who trust us with their care. Here are a few strategies you can try:
Breathwork: Engage in deep breathing practices like box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold the exhale for 4). This helps center your energy before and after sessions.
Guided Visualizations: Use visualizations to cleanse your energy and set intentions for your sessions.
Spiritual or Cleansing Baths: After a session, take a cleansing bath to wash away any lingering negative energy.
Nature Walks: Ground yourself by spending time in nature. Earthing or walking barefoot on natural surfaces can help you release accumulated energy.
Movement: Swaying, humming, or shaking your body vigorously can help release the energy you've absorbed throughout the day.
Mindful Practices: Engage in activities that nourish your soul, such as coloring, yoga, aromatherapy, or candle gazing. Pulling tarot or oracle cards can also offer reflection and insight.
Tea Rituals: Drinking tea mindfully can be a simple yet powerful way to ground yourself and replenish your energy.
Divination: Pull tarot or oracle cards to help you prepare for your day or reflect at the end of your day. Try our Tarot Spread. (See spread below)
Embrace Self-Care as Sacred Work
Remember, your well-being is just as important as the well-being of those you care for. By integrating these practices into your routine, you can protect your energy and continue to serve from a place of wholeness. Caring for yourself isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity. Your work is sacred, and so is your health. Take the time to nurture yourself, so you can continue to nurture others.
